The Best Villains Are the Ones You Almost Agree With

A villain who is evil just for the sake of it? Boring. A villain who genuinely believes they’re doing the right thing? Terrifying. The best antagonists aren’t just obstacles for the hero—they have their own goals, motivations, and internal logic. Even authors working with a ghostwriting company understand that a weak villain makes for a forgettable story. Some of the greatest villains—Killmonger, Magneto, or even Thanos—have motives that almost make us agree with them. A well-written antagonist challenges the hero not just physically, but philosophically. So let’s discuss—who’s a villain that was so well-written, you almost sided with them? What makes a truly great antagonist?
