In firearms proficiency 5e are considered optional weapons, and their availability and types vary depending on the Dungeon Master’s campaign setting. Commonly used firearms include pistols, muskets, and occasionally more advanced options like rifles or revolvers, especially in settings with steampunk or high-tech elements. Each firearm has unique stats, including higher damage and greater range than standard weapons, but they often require reloading and have limited ammunition. These types may also come with misfire mechanics, where a roll below a certain number causes the weapon to jam, adding an element of risk to their use.

Proficiency with firearms impacts gameplay significantly by allowing characters to handle these powerful weapons effectively, improving their accuracy and control. Without proficiency, characters suffer disadvantage on attack rolls with firearms, making it difficult to hit targets consistently. Proficiency also enables characters to avoid the pitfalls of firearms, such as reducing the likelihood of misfires or effectively managing reloading actions. In campaigns where firearms are available, proficiency turns these weapons into valuable tools, combining high damage potential with tactical complexity, giving proficient characters a strategic advantage in both ranged and close-quarter combat situations.
